| As usual when I discuss
Wicca, the topic of Magick and spells arises for debate. What is it, how
is it used, what can you do with it, and many other questions I have fielded
on occasion. I also have heard questions such as to describe the difference
between a spell and a ritual, if there is such thing as White and Black
Magick, and the ever popular "Isn't Magick Satanic???" I hope I can answer
these questions and more on one page. The rest may be represented in the
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section. First of all, I spell it "Magick" rather than "magic" to separate the difference between what we do and what David Copperfield, Penn and Teller, and Jonathan Winters do. I may wish to use a mirror for scrying, but I'm not THAT talented to hide the Statue of Liberty through mirrors and illusion! Magick, in a nutshell, is a process to bring about a desired result with the aid of the Divine and our own abilities. Some divide it into Rituals and Spells. These are my definitions of the two: Rituals are the entire processes used. I do rituals for holidays, full moons (esbats), and new moons (I'm generally a new moon person). For me, rituals are a process of celebration and should remain as such. I don't work Magick on holidays because I think the holidays should remain sacred to their purpose. But that's just my opinion. Scrying and Tarot, etc, are okay in my book on holidays, but spells themselves, I try to save for the appropriate moon phase nearest the day (or night) of the holiday. My reasoning is that for holidays, you want to direct your energy to the holiday and the celebration. With spells, you raise extra energy for the result you wish for. Guided prophecy such as Tarot does not raise the same energy, but triggers your own mind and third eye to see. Spells, on the other hand, are similar to "a prayer with props." Compare the two: In a prayer, you ask God for your wish, that you can't accomplish on your own, to be granted. After you say your prayer it's all in God's hands, and you wait for a "Yes" or a "No." Well, a spell is the same thing. You call upon The God and Goddess (Or a particular deity if you so choose. See Who Wiccans Worship for a better description.) and make your request. The props you use, candles, herbs, incense, stones, etc., are for mere emphasis to invoke certain elements of your wish. Generally, you time the spell to a particular moon phase. In the end, however, it's up to the God and the Goddess to let the spell be complete. Both prayer and spells have one important need for them to be complete: THE NEED. If you give a half-hearted attempt in either a spell or prayer, you'll receive a half-hearted response. I can't say that if you REALLY need something, your wish, spell, or prayer will necessarily come true, but the probability tends to be higher. I don't think there is such thing as Black or White Magick. (And that is in no way a racial attack.) Magick itself is neutral...what a person does with it is what would be deemed Dark or Light. Evil intentions are, of course, considered Black Magick. I also believe that people who use Magick and have no clue as to what they are doing (lack of maturity and studying) also rest in the area of Black Magick because they are "in the dark" because they don't know what they are truly doing. Another roadblock question that comes up often is "Does Magick come from the Devil?" Well, Wiccans don't believe in Satan or the Devil. Those are Christian concepts. Magick, and the powers that come with it, are in the earth and in ourselves. In a spell, we ask the Divine to tap those powers that we possess. This is not a forum for me to give out spells and rituals. I don't believe that I should do that because it's more powerful for a person to write their own. You can do a search on the Internet and find spells and rituals aplenty. I did, and I modify those for my own use. After I'm done with them, they hardly resemble what they began as! And I don't want to sound like an ogre, but I also can not give out the links to those spells and rituals. Not that I don't want to, but I can't...when I find them, I copy them to Microsoft Word, print them out, and then delete them from my computer. I also don't believe in giving out spells because of the Wiccan Rede, "An' it harm none, do what thou wilt." Granted, I'm not harming anyone by handing out a spell for binding, for example, but if the person I gave it to harmed someone else, that negative energy can reflect back on me because I was the one responsible for giving out that spell in the first place. I have no problem with guiding a person on how to write their own spell given that I know the entire situation, but I can't guarantee that it will be what the person wants. The Wiccan Rede is a guideline that, to me, sums up the entire 10 Commandments into one. Basically it means that you should live your life, but NEVER harm others...not even yourself! Even speaking angry words against another can come back to you! The reason I keep mentioning things coming back and reflecting one a person is because another basic Wiccan belief is the Three-Fold Law. It states that whatever energy you send out, it will return to you three-fold. It's a form of Karma, but in actuality, many religions believe in similar ideas. The main thing is that Magick is NOT a quick fix. It should be a last resort. You can't perform a spell to pass a test you didn't study for. While it may work, it would be far better to simply study and save that energy for taking the test. A spell to help you study is one thing, but it cannot take the place of your study materials. Magick is a beautiful, natural thing. It is found in the energy of everything around you. The next time you see a full moon rise, just think it's not just magical, but it's Magickal!
