College Wicca
Advertising for a Campus Pagan Group
To advertise for a Pagan group, you should come up with slogans that are interesting, eye-catching, and clever. They should also be somewhat obscure! Perhaps this is my own paranoia kicking in, but my group has had troubles in the past of other students tearing down our flyers and posters. Now we make them so people have no reason to be offended, so they catch the attention of other Pagans, and so we don't put a whole lot of time into a flyer that might be gone in a few hours. :)

If you choose a picture for a flyer or poster, try subtle imagery. The pictures from some Tarot cards are often good to use, depending on your deck. Try the Sun or any of the Aces cards as a central image. You may have to adapt the Pentacles (or Coins) cards, though. I don't suggest using a Pentacle in its normal form because some people still fear the picture as being "Satanic." Lots of crescent moons and suns are always good!

You may also want to use some fancy fonts or try writing in Runes with a translation underneath. If you know calligraphy, embellish your words with a fancy handwriting. You can also download different fonts on the internet, including some that are Pagan-specific. (Try Truetype Fonts by Curtis Clark and Coron's Sources of Fonts for some great new fonts to download--I've downloaded a gazillion of these!)

Slogans are always difficult to come up with. If you're advertising for a Samhain festival, try something like "How Halloween is REALLY celebrated." For Mabon, my group simply wrote "Come Party with the Pagans!" Your slogan may depend on your particular activity. If you want to simply advertise a meeting, try something like "Do you prefer The Spiral Dance to the Macarena?" A slogan like this is obscure enough that Pagan people will notice it, but non-Pagans won't bother. I've also found "That REAL Old Time Religion" from the Riders of the Crystal Winds Book of Shadows to be a help. (Note: If you download the ROCW BoS for spells, there are very few in there. WRITE YOUR OWN! Otherwise, there's a LOT of great information to be found in it, and I recommend taking a look at it.) My group has selected one stanza to use per flyer. Some examples are:

Some folks worship all of Nature
Tho they love to taunt and bait-cher
They're just funnin', they don't hate-cher
And they're good enough for me!

Meeting at the Witching Hour
By the Bud, and Branch, and Flower
Folks are raising up the Power
And that's where I want to be!

Let us call an Elemental
For a temporary rental
Just as long as it's gentle
It is good enough for me!

(Discordian)
We will sing a song for Eris
(Golden apples for the fairest!)
Though sometimes she likes to scare us
But she's good enough for me!

(Druid)
In Pwyll's hall you will be welcome
But he's not at home too often
Spends all his time in Annwyfn
And that's good enough for me!

We will venerate old Bacchus
Drinking beer and eating tacos
Til you've tried it, please don't knock us
'Cause it's good enough for me!

Whether Low Church or it's High Church
Or it's Pie-Up-In-The-Sky Church
Come on down and visit my Church
'Cause it's good enough for me!

And one of my favorites...

We will sing a verse for Loki
He's the old Norse god of Chaos
Which is why this verse don't rhyme or scan or nothin'
But it's good enough for me!

Play around with these and your imagination. You may find that some people will tear the flyers down, but think of it as though they wanted to keep them. :) Who knows? They may just show up for your meetings!
