Group Activities for Litha

With people gone for the summer, the chances that your group will be intact for Litha are pretty slim unless the majority of your members are from the area. I have to mention that if any key members happen to live too far away to visit for this sabbat, you might want to keep your activities down to a minimum at this time so you don't make them feel like you're leaving them out.

That doesn't mean there has to be a long period of inactivity during the summer. One theme of Litha is to relax and celebrate the period between the planting and harvesting season, and letting the earth do its work for you. Translated to college life, summer vacation should be a vacation between two semesters. Now if you're in summer school, you can't relax on your bum as much as you'd probably like, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the summer for what it has to offer.

If you can have a pool party for the local members, you should do so just to keep people active. Getting together in relaxed settings can strengthen the bonds of friendship, plus it's not so much of a big deal that out-of-state members get upset. Basically you just want to socialize as a group off campus. Go to the movies, a zoo, a park, a Renaissance Faire...anything to meet with each other in a non-school setting. If you really feel up to it and you want to visit an out-of-state member, have a road trip! Go see what that member's area has to offer! Speaking of road trips, you may also want to get a few people together to visit any occult shops in your area, or even across the state.

While you're relaxing, the summertime is also the perfect time to plan for the upcoming school year and events and activities you may want to do as a group. You can keep in contact via e-mail or e-mail lists so everyone has a voice in the decisions being made. Posters can be made, tools can be collected, you can shop as a group for any candles, incense, or other implements of ritual so you're ready for the rest of the school year. You can continue organizing a group Book of Shadows so it's ready for the upcoming school year. Do what you can now so when you're busy with school work you won't realize at the last minute that you're out of your group's favorite incense before your Samhain ritual and you have to put off studying to go get more.

What Litha boils down to is that it's a time to relax for your entire group. If you want to hold a ritual, you can hold a sunrise ritual by getting together while it's still dark in the morning, and timing the climax of your ritual so it occurs when the sun rises. Lots of drums to welcome the sun are common in these rituals. Again, however, make sure you don't alienate any members who would like to be there but can't make it for some reason or another. You may also want to look into some Midsummer practices of cultures that celebrate the Midnight Sun (such as the Scandinavian countries) if you don't have such a late sunset and would like to think of the holiday in a different perspective. If you can do it as a group, just be sure to play the day away to celebrate the sabbat!
