Like Litha, Lughnasadh falls during the summer break, and unless your members are local or on campus for summer school, it's still a good time from doing too many "official" group activities, and instead using the holiday to socialize. Lughnasadh, also known as Lammas, is the first harvest of the season. It's Christianized name is "Loaf Mass," and is when loaves of bread were baked and blessed. Your group can hold a similar get-together to make bread. You can make enough for each member to have a loaf, plus you can use them if you choose to hold a ritual. Another food-related idea is to have an outing to go berry-picking. Around this time, there are many places where you go and pick your own for a minimal fee. You may even know of places where you can find wild blueberries and raspberries if you're in the right climate. I remember picking gallons of wild blueberries with my family in Upper Michigan, and though they were much smaller than your farm-raised variety, they were in great abundance that you'd never know we had taken any. You don't have to be a great cook to be able to do anything with your own little harvest. Simple recipes can be found on-line, and it's great to share with friends, family, and even strangers. If you can pull it off, you may want to consider having a small bake sale to earn some group money for the new school year to buy the candles and incense you will probably want later. Also like Litha, you probably should use some time to get together with your group members to plan for the upcoming school year. If your school has an Activities Faire, you want to make sure you have information on hand and flyers to pass out. You may want to decide what day will be your first official meeting. You should take stock of your group tools, library, and intellectual property (such as rituals your group has designed) and see what gaps need to be filled. Litha was a time for resting, Lughnasadh is a time to begin buckling down again. Decide which Sabbats you want to celebrate as a group and any activities you want to participate in. Do some research to see if your group should take a trip to a Renaissance Faire or Pagan Festival. Find out when Fall Break or any other class-free holidays may occur and plan for a trip or activity then. It's good to start filling out your calendar while you can to make any necessary arrangements like organizing drivers or car rentals, lodging, renting camping equipment, and buying food or other supplies. Finally, this is the last sabbat before school starts, so you may want to forego the formal ritual and have a party (such as a picnic or pool party) instead. Enjoy your freedom while it lasts!
