Solitary Activities for Litha

I have to admit I'm a little biased about Litha...even though I've often celebrated the Sabbat as a solitary, it's also my birthday so I do have some kind of get-together with friends. Considering Litha is all about relaxing, celebrating the hard work you've done, and having a vacation before the next work cycle starts up again, I think it's best if you can do the same. The people you get together with don't have to be Pagan of any type...just get out, have fun, and enjoy the summer while it's here.

Go to a theme park, a zoo, the woods near your house, or simply laze your day away by a pool if you can. Spend some time outside, basking in the sun's glory while you can. Don't forget the SPF 50 sunscreen, though! In my area, it's easily 90°F at this point in the summer, with high humidity, terrible heat index, and no sign of relief any time soon. So be careful when you're outside...drink lots of water and wear cool clothing. But do enjoy the outdoors before you're stuck inside a classroom.

Rituals can be really simple, too. If you're living at home and still in the broomcloset, you probably want to leave your full regalia packed up, anyway. Start off your day by getting up before sunrise. Go outside, face east, and watch the sun as it comes up. Today is the day it's at the height of its glory. Then you can go back inside and take a nap if you wish. *grin* Enjoy your day, however, and celebrate it by doing those things you always want to do but never have the time for. This is a turning point in the year, even though it might not be visible to the eye or to the thermometer outside.

Don't forget to include your human and furry co-inhabitants of the earth during the Sabbat, too. Set out dishes of water for the birds, and if you are walking down a street and you see a homeless person, offer to buy him/her a drink like Gatorade that will not only re-hydrate the body, but also supply some nutrients. You may also offer to buy him/her a meal...going to a Subway and getting a tuna sub is pretty cheap and the people are usually very thankful about it. A friend and I would do that every so often...giving money is nice, but offering a simple meal is a nice form of mundane "magick" that truly helps another person better than casting spells and hoping his/her situation gets better. I know sometimes a homeless person can look scary, and as a female, I know how intimidating it can be, but that's another human being, too. Feel out the situation and the person, and then make your decision.

Finally, try to be outside again when the sun sets. Meditate on the meaning of the sabbat, and on any personal meanings it may have to you. This is the longest day of the year, and not to be cliché, Carpe diem!
