Having a Mabon celebration as a Solitary may not be as easy as working with a group, but you can still get out there and enjoy what the world has to offer while it lasts. See what kinds of local and campus activities are available (and that you can get to...transportation can be a pain!) and see about joining in. Grab a roommate or a friend and bring them with you so you can share the fun with them. This is such a pleasant holiday...one that's filled with good food, beautiful weather, and you haven't yet fought with your roommate over the use of the stereo while studying for exams! As with the group activities, find a farmer's market or even make a special trip to the grocery store to find what local produce is plentiful at this time. Take the time to make a good meal...yes, you can even do it in the dorm microwaves...and share it with others. Make sure to save a little as a libation to give back to the earth. You can also use your food in a personal ritual. While this is a season for celebration, it is also a season of reflection. The God, represented in the grain and other food, is sacrificed for our survivial. The Goddess is becoming the Crone, and the land appears to be dying by Her hand. But we know that death is followed by rebirth, so while our reflection is somber, it is not sad. Use these themes in your ritual...how change is necessary and beautiful. The once green sprouts that became the grain have now been cut down and baked into loaves of bread. The green vines that bore the grapes have turned brown and the grapes have become the wine. We, too, will go through a change like this when we eventually shed our shells of bodies so they may re-nourish the ground, and our souls will move on to be reborn at the appropriate time. But enjoy your time. Collect leaves to use as decorations for your altar. As in the Group Activities, choose a tree on campus and adopt it as your own for the year. While it is still nice outside, study at the base of the tree. Gain strength and wisdom from its stability. Pour out your libations there, and even give it a hug once in a while...you may feel silly at first, but it will make you feel good, too. Give back to your community if you can volunteer. Yes, at this point you're still just beginning to get into the swing of the school year, but volunteer in any form of work that you like to do. You may also think about organizing a canned food drive or even working with other student groups in their activities. When in doubt, you can also donate blood or plasma to give a part of yourself back to the world. (Better yet, a lot of blood donation sites give you free t-shirts, and they also often pay you for plasma donations!) Like the God, sacrifice a part of yourself...your time...to help others. Help others see and celebrate the bounty of the season! Most importantly, have fun and enjoy this time of the year while you can!
