Reviews - Paganism on Television

TELEVISION

The X-Files: Okay, Chris Carter made some bad decisions in some of his stories, but I've been a fan since the pilot first showed, and I'm not going to stop liking the show for a few mistakes. A constant look into the occult, UFOs, and the general unexplained wierdness. I think we've all heard of this show and have formed our own opinions. :) Just to note, I consider myself the Dana Scully of the Pagan world...I'm incredibly skeptical about everything, even though I've seen a lot of "unexplainables." *g*

Buffy, the Vampire Slayer: I know it sounds silly, but this is one of my favorite shows out there. My suitemates and I literally scheduled around Buffy, gathered together in our common room, and watched the show as a group. It's notable to mention that Buffy's friend Willow is practicing Witchcraft, though on occasion the script has a few mistakes. Unlike most shows, Buffy explores the darker world with a huge amount of humor.

Charmed: Okay, while I was in France, they showed Charmed on Saturday nights when the old season of Buffy ended...and I watched it because there was nothing else on. Charmed has gotten better. I guess my real issue with it now is that while Buffy is full of the paranormal and not *really* supposed to be serious, and Sabrina is a TGIF-type show, Charmed still hovers around the idea that what is on the show is exactly what we do. Just remember, it's FICTION. (Please don't write to me asking for spells on how to do what they do!)

Sabrina, the Teenage Witch: This is on the silly side of Witchcraft. I like the show, but then again, you have to reduce yourself to the 6th grade mentality that's required to watch any show on TGIF. Funny show, but don't put much into it for realism. Buffy does a better job, in my opinion.

The Adventures of Sinbad: I think that's the correct title. This is a Hercules/Xena-esque show of historical literary fiction stretching some major boundaries of what time period it's in. It doesn't really matter now, because I haven't seen this one on the air in about a year, anyway. I did catch one episode some time ago, though, which prompted me to put this review on this page...they did mention witchcraft in that episode. No, actually they mentioned Wicca and Druids. The problem was, they pitted the Wiccans against the Druids in an episode which I believe was entitled "Book of Shadows." Basically it was Sinbad and company teamed with some "Wiccans" out to protect the evil "Book of Shadows" from the even more evil "Druids." Okay, let's just set two very valid Pagan religions against each other in the names of entertainment and ignorance, shall we? Let's just say I'm glad I haven't seen this show on the air for a long while!

The New Adventures of Robin Hood: I watched this one in France, once again because there was nothing else on at that time slot. I don't know what the creators of this show were trying, but they did a pretty good job of slaughtering history, Arthurian Legend, and even the story of Robin Hood. Okay, I can let them get away with some of that (the history, for example--it's another Hercules/Xena-style show) but when combined, it was kind of painful to watch. What can I say, I'm a masochist... *L*
