An Exciting and Dangerous Trend: Spells for Fun and Profit

I don't believe I explained myself well enough on the Spells page as to why I don't give out spells. This was copied directly off a message board I visit:

all i am asking for is spells.if anyone can lend me one just do.im sick of creating topics and nobody giving me what i want.so come on, dont be so ignoramous and give me some spells, easy simple spells and dont say"make up your own" or twist the question.just gimmie gimmie gimmie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love it. *sarcasm* Because we won't give out spells, we are being "ignoramous" while the person is hoping to sit back and let things come to him on a silver platter instead of doing a little bit of work on his own. I'm sure the original author meant it to be funny (I hope!) but this is becoming a prevalent attitude on that board and in the Pagan community. I would rather just say this was a random example and not a trend, except for the fact that there are people at that message board who ask for spells, say they don't care about the religion behind it, they REALLY don't care for understanding the Karma that goes with it, they just want someone to love them and do their bidding.

Now granted, you don't have to be Wiccan to practice spells. Nor do you have to be any religion to do spellwork, pray, or meditate. These actions are not bound by religion. But there is some truth to when people describe spellwork as opening a floodgate and having to let the actions come to pass. Technicians at a dam are skilled in what they do so when they let some water out, they know just how much to do the best good while doing the least amount of damage. Being Witches and practicing magick is no different.

Spellwork is about drawing up, manipulating, and controlling energy. It is not a difficult thing to perform magick, but without a little bit of learning, that flood of energy can easily get out of control and shoot around wildly. First of all, allowing it to go wild means that some of it may hit your desired goal. Where does the rest of it go? Hopefully, most of it will go out to the world to dissolve on its own. But without control, it could do harm.

Spellwork is not lighting a candle, saying or chanting a few words, and hoping it goes to your desired goal. I only wish it were that easy! No one can prove it to you if you do not believe. While I do not believe in mere coincidence for most cases, I also do not believe that if you don't invest part of yourself into a spell your goal will not come to pass. For another analogy, it's like investing money: If you do not put money into an investment, you will not receive anything no matter how much you wish for a return. In the meantime, the more you invest, the more you may get back...but don't forget, that's more you may lose.

This is why people tell you to write your own spells. You invest your own energy. You put yourself into the equation. You take a risk, and if you have the strength and knowledge of how to control it, the more you will see your goal.

Spells are your responsibility, no one else's. If you practice, practice responsibly and may you get exactly what you deserve.
